Ten new clergy were commissioned and another 23 clergy were ordained Saturday morning. (One person who couldn’t attend Conference was ordained on June 6th.) Bishop Gwinn, in delivering the ordination sermon, told them, “You have been called to die to self…Dying to self must have a time when there is an intentional act of the will but it is also a daily and continual act.” The Bishop reminded the clergy that one of the biggest temptations they will face is to make their role “a job instead of a calling; a profession instead of a vocation.”

After the acts of commissioning and ordination, a representative of the retiring class of 2010 presented a mantle, or stole, that Bishop Gwinn symbolically placed on a member of the class of ordinands.

At the end of the service, the bishop fixed the appointments for the 2010-2011 ministry year. The churches to whom a pastor was being newly appointed numbered 150 this summer. With a blessing, Bishop Gwinn sent the Annual Conference forward into ministry.
